A facility identified an opportunity to improve the accessibility of two existing bulk bag unloading systems by redesigning the surrounding platform structure. The existing platform configuration limited forklift access during material handling and created challenges for maintenance personnel performing routine inspections and service work. The objective was to develop a safer, more efficient platform layout that improved both operations and maintainability without disrupting the existing process.
Chief Engineering was engaged to provide P2 and P3 engineering services to evaluate the current equipment layout and develop a redesigned platform structure. The project focused on the pre-gel starch bulk bag unloader and the vermiculite bulk bag unloader, two systems that required improved access for material loading and routine maintenance. The engineering effort included updating equipment layouts, evaluating access routes, and designing a structural platform that balanced operational efficiency with safe personnel movement.
The project began with comprehensive field scanning, allowing the engineering team to capture existing conditions while completing data collection alongside another project during the same site visit. Using this information, multiple platform concepts were developed and evaluated through close collaboration between internal designers and external structural resources. After reviewing several layout alternatives, the team selected the solution that best improved forklift maneuverability while enhancing maintenance access around the unloading equipment. Additional design refinements were incorporated during the P3 phase to further improve constructability and overall functionality.
Strong collaboration throughout the project was a key factor in its success. Regular communication between the design team and structural engineering resources ensured that discipline-specific considerations were addressed early, resulting in a coordinated design that met both operational and structural requirements. The project also demonstrated the value of leveraging internal expertise, allowing engineering resources to complete a larger portion of the work in-house while preserving subcontracting capacity for future project phases.
The platform redesign was delivered on time, under the originally quoted engineering hours, and with no rework required. The project achieved a 29% profit margin while providing the client with a practical solution that improves day-to-day operations and lays the foundation for future design phases. A proposal for the next stage of engineering has since been submitted, continuing the collaborative partnership between Chief Engineering and the client.
This project demonstrates how thoughtful platform design can improve more than accessibility. By combining detailed field data, collaborative engineering, and practical design solutions, Chief Engineering delivered an upgrade that supports safer maintenance activities, more efficient material handling, and long-term operational performance.
