Laser Scanning and General Arrangement Drawings for an Industrial Facility

Chief Engineering was engaged to perform a comprehensive laser scan of an existing industrial building with no prior documentation. The objective was to capture an accurate representation of the building’s interior and produce 2D AutoCAD general arrangement (GA) drawings to support renovation planning, facility documentation, and future site development.

This project focused on Building 45 at an active manufacturing site in Memphis, Tennessee. With no existing drawings available, the client needed a reliable, accurate baseline of the building’s layout to inform future decision-making. Because Chief was already supporting work elsewhere on the site, the project was a natural extension of an established relationship and allowed the client to address a long-standing documentation gap.

The laser scanning effort was completed in a single day, providing a detailed digital capture of the interior space. Using the scan data, GA drawings were developed to reflect the building’s existing conditions. These drawings now serve as a dependable reference for planning, coordination, and potential renovation efforts.

While the client’s primary point of contact was new to the facility and still becoming familiar with site processes, the project moved forward smoothly. Drawings were submitted for review, and despite limited feedback, the work was completed as scoped and delivered as a clean, usable documentation set. The project itself was straightforward, efficient, and reflective of a repeatable approach that Chief would readily apply again on similar facilities.

By combining fast, accurate laser scanning with clear, construction-ready drawings, Chief Engineering delivered a practical solution that transformed an undocumented building into a usable planning asset reinforcing the value of reality capture as a foundation for informed facility management.
