Clearwell Pump Installation & Piping Design

Project Overview

A facility required the installation of a new clearwell pump to replace an existing unit and improve system performance. The project involved integrating new equipment into an existing process system, requiring precise piping design, coordination with existing infrastructure, and construction-ready documentation to support installation.

The upgrade included decommissioning an adjacent pump and tying the new system into existing lines, making accuracy and constructability critical to project success.

Project Objective

The primary objective was to provide engineering design services to support the installation of a new clearwell pump and base at a designated location identified during a site visit. The design needed to ensure seamless integration with existing piping, including connections to a previously isolated valve and tie-ins to active process lines.

Additionally, the project aimed to deliver Issued for Construction (IFC) documentation that would enable efficient installation while minimizing disruption to ongoing operations.

Scope of Work

The engineering scope included:

  • Design of a new clearwell pump installation and base
  • Integration of the new pump into existing piping systems
  • Connection to an existing valve previously blocked with a blind flange
  • Decommissioning of an existing adjacent pump
  • Development of IFC-level drawings and documentation
  • Revisions to piping design based on updated flow and layout requirements

As the project progressed, additional scope was introduced, including resizing recirculation piping to accommodate increased flow rates (up to 450 GPM) and modifying suction and

Project Execution & Challenges

The project progressed efficiently from initial for-approval (IFA) documentation to a full IFC drawing package. However, a key challenge arose when construction began using IFA drawings rather than the finalized IFC set. This resulted in discrepancies between installed conditions and the intended final design.

To address this, the engineering team remodeled the system based on actual installation conditions and reissued updated IFC documentation reflecting the as-built configuration. This required additional coordination and design effort, particularly around pump location and piping layout adjustments.

Despite these challenges, the team maintained responsiveness and delivered updated documentation to support successful project completion.

Results

  • Delivered on time
  • Maintained strong client satisfaction
  • Successfully provided revised, construction-ready IFC documentation
  • Adapted design to align with real-world installation conditions

The project demonstrated flexibility and problem-solving in the face of evolving field conditions.

Conclusion

The Clearwell Pump Installation project highlights the importance of precise piping design, clear communication, and adaptability during construction. By advancing the project from initial design through IFC documentation—and responding quickly to field-driven changes—the engineering team ensured the system was successfully integrated into existing operations.

This project reinforces that successful piping design is not only about technical accuracy, but also about maintaining alignment between design intent and real-world execution.
