Project Overview
This project was initiated to address a critical safety gap within an existing nitrogen line serving a Pulse Tube Filter system. While the 1-inch nitrogen line had been installed as part of a previous scope of work, a pressure relief valve (PRV) was not procured at that time. Recognizing the importance of overpressure protection in pressurized gas systems, the client engaged engineering support to properly size and specify a PRV that would ensure system safety, regulatory compliance, and long-term reliability.
Project Objective
The primary objective of this effort was to provide engineering services to accurately size and specify a pressure relief valve capable of protecting the nitrogen line from potential overpressure scenarios caused by system upsets. Pressure relief devices are critical safety components, particularly in nitrogen systems where pressure excursions can occur rapidly and without visible warning. This scope was focused on confirming that the proposed PRV would operate effectively within the system’s design limits while aligning with applicable industry standards.
Engineering Approach
The engineering team began by reviewing the existing system design to understand how the nitrogen line interfaced with the Pulse Tube Filter system. Key operating parameters—including normal and maximum operating pressures, potential upset conditions, and flow characteristics—were evaluated to establish a reliable basis for calculations. Using these inputs, detailed process calculations were performed in accordance with relevant ASME and API standards to determine appropriate relief capacity and setpoints. The analysis ensured that the selected valve would adequately protect the system without introducing unnecessary operational constraints.
Coordination and Execution
This project represented an additional scope added to an active engagement after a sizing requirement was identified as having been missed in the original scope. During execution, project ownership transitioned on the client side, requiring additional coordination to maintain alignment on objectives, timing, and deliverables. The effort involved close collaboration among the client, internal project leads, and outsourced engineering resources to ensure calculations were completed accurately and efficiently. Despite the added coordination, the work progressed smoothly and without schedule impacts.
Deliverables and Outcome
The final deliverable was a concise and clearly documented engineering recommendation outlining the appropriate PRV specifications for the nitrogen line. This included confirmation of sizing methodology, applicable design standards, and key assumptions used in the analysis. The recommendation provided the client with confidence that the selected PRV would meet safety and compliance requirements while integrating seamlessly into the existing system.
By addressing a previously overlooked safety requirement, this project helped strengthen the overall integrity of the nitrogen system and demonstrated the value of targeted engineering support. Through careful evaluation, standards-based calculations, and effective coordination, the effort delivered a practical solution that enhanced system safety and supported the client’s operational goals.
